choose practicals that can be clamped easy to a stand that way you can finetune the direction of the light easier for the closeup and of course plan the blocking , use maybe your own lamps and dim them for the shots you need
This might sound lazy but, bring eiterh a good makeup artist or a good matting powder, this makes lighting so much easier. Wet and oily skin is often impossible to get to look super soft.
The last thing is color grading, mask the face, colordroper on the brightest parts use only luma information finetune the selection and pull it down.
Some things are simply not fixable with lights only

In the meantime, i watched an interview with the DOP of Mr. Robot, where he said he was afraid of the studio when they delivered it. So i think there is problem. IT seems that rule of thirds is the first thing DOPs often learn and i think they rely to much of it because it is the standard and some also great ways to compose an image are left out. Because the Studio or the Producer with way less knowledge also heard of rule of thirds and eye lines and the absolute basics and then they judge an image based on that.
I just wish i would see more uncommon compositions, it keeps it interesting for me
At the end of the day you still need to cram all the stops a camera delivers into a space of maybe 9-10 stops. For example, backlight people in the sun. Of course you can squeeze the image down to not loose the sky and to bring back the Face exposurewise but it will A: look pretty flat, like early HDR photography images and B: if you do not introduce light and deal with the spill even the alexa 35 will not save you from very difficult to grade skintones.
I have to do that all the time (because my sidehussle is Wedding and Wedding fashion film like this -Youtube Link-) where i often have no choice to light anything outside and there are often scenes that do not exceed the 13-15 stops of my ronin4d 8k so if it does not exceed the cameras dynamic range the advantage of the alexa 35 disappears and you will only see the sun as a slightly smaller white dot in the sky.
Scenes that heavily benefit from the alexa 35 dynamic range are internal shots where the windows simply do not blow out as much, everything in dark forests, sun set, goldenhour, everthing in the shade… but still the green spill from grass will be more or spill from colorful clothes
On the Pyxis it does not matter. Changing the Temperature in post is no problem with .Braw files. But check the app store, there are color meters, which are not accurate but at least you have a way to compare. For example the app might say this light is 3350 kelvin and a good colormeter will say it is spot on 3200k but it is still a help for comparing light sources and make them match eachother. So for convenience if one of the light is the key light i would use the key light as the one you set your WB to because overall i would prefer good skintones to other lights being accurate
