Personally i think where and how you place the point of interest in the frame can help the story so immensly that i really think the rule of thirds should only be used when the scene is quiet and boring and balanced be cause the rule of thirds itself feels so balanced that it is hard to tell anything but balance. (OF course it can work but other compositions would do a better job)
Since Homecoming and Mr. Robot other ways to tell more of the story and more of the feel of a scene with composition alone. For Example a dialog at a table between boss and trainee. If the Boss has enormous headroom that makes the whole room becomes also a character in this scene will feel way more intimidating, detached, uneasy and there is so much tension. But every now and then i whatch “no-budget-movies” and the compositions are religiously either rule of thirds or centered … that is sad
Do you agree? Why do you think these extreme compositions are still rare?
And my question is, guiding the eye to the next shot so that it still feels pleasant to watch after the cut, is important in my opinion. If you plan to do this, are you as a DOP involved in the cutting or do you just deliver and it is then in the hands of the cutter, or are these choices made by the Director only and he guides the editor in the editing process?

Maybe you don’t see extreme compositions all the time because if they were commonplace, they wouldn’t be considered extreme?
I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to compose if you have a purpose, if it feels correct for the scene. Sometimes subtlety, balance, simplicity in support of a performance or a quiet moment works better — you don’t always want to call attention to yourself.
I mean i totally agree and i get it!
In the meantime, i watched an interview with the DOP of Mr. Robot, where he said he was afraid of the studio when they delivered it. So i think there is problem. IT seems that rule of thirds is the first thing DOPs often learn and i think they rely to much of it because it is the standard and some also great ways to compose an image are left out. Because the Studio or the Producer with way less knowledge also heard of rule of thirds and eye lines and the absolute basics and then they judge an image based on that.
I just wish i would see more uncommon compositions, it keeps it interesting for me
