BLADERUNNER 2049 – K’S ROOFTOP SET
Looking at Lighting
This set occupied the whole of one stage and we used the stage walls to mount “gag” lights, which represented the lights in windows of buildings in the deep backgrounds. The lights were added to in post but other than painting out the stage roof and adding some moving spinners the set was pretty much shot in camera.
The LED sign was a playback of something we shot during pre production. The moving overhead lights that vary from red to a cool white (as in image at the top of the page) are created by two rows of Colour Force LED fixtures, the longest of which stretched for over 140’. There were an additional 4 Bad Boy spotlights rigged in the perms and programmed to pan across the set in specific patterns and on cue.
Various soft washes of light were created by using multiples of small Fresnel fixtures, as there was so little space in which to hide any lights.
The fluorescent lights mounted to each side of the doorway onto the roof match the ones we see outside the apartment and in the stairwell.
The plan attached was an initial idea that we started rigging to but as we developed the set we actually cut the number of lamps used by about a third.
The entire grid of the stage was rigged with misters, which were used to generate the fog of the atmosphere, and with sprinkler heads to generate the rain.
