      Hey Mr. Deakins and forum!

I will be shooting a spec commercial in a few weeks time and I am currently looking for the right lenses for the project. I have tested a few vintage sets by now (Canon FD, Contax Zeiss, Mamiya 645, Soviet Glass, Nikkor Ais) and also some newer budget cine lenses (Meike FF Primes). Though i like some of these lenses, I am actually looking for lenses with undercorrected spherical abberation. The perfect lenses for me would be the Arri Signature Primes, but theses are way out of our budget. Does anybody know sets of affordable lenses with undercorrected spherical abberation? Any advice is helpful.

      Thank you for your time!

      Michael

It’s surprising to hear that you wanted even more spherical aberration than something like the Canon FDs could offer. Those are extremely ‘glowy’ lenses wide open. If that wasn’t enough then I’d consider using diffusion.

Yes that is true and I am not fond of spherical abberation in the slightest. I have made a mistake, thinking that sperical abberation has an effect on bokeh. As I have found out today, my question does not have much to do with spherical abberation.

My actual question is: Does anybody know of affordable lenses, which have undercorreted bokeh.

All the lenses I have tested have over corrected or at least corrected bokeh and i am looking for the exact opposit.

Sorry for the confusion, i am not really into the technical terminology of cinematograhpy.

Tons of stuff out there but not sure they fit your needs: Olympus, Super Speeds, Lomos, Fuji EBC’s, Kowas, Minoltas.

You mention ARRI SP’s but those are probably a perfect lens in every way, especially when handling OOF elements.

If you want a really clean lens on a budget i’d maybe look into Sigma FF Primes, if you want a zoom then maybe an Angeniuex EZ-1 or EZ-2 depending on your needs. Great lenses.

              Confirming for clarity –

By spherical aberrations, you don’t mean spherical optics struggle to converge light to a point evenly across a plane? That’s why you use aspherical optics—ARRI SPs are as described above corrected with this in mind. Every element is aspherical and very costly.

With the term undercorrected bokeh, are you searching for glass with a very soft feathered edge of the bokeh, similar to ARRI SP’s?

That is my current understandig of spherical abberation, but in my first post I confused it with the correction of bokeh.

Yes, that is exactly what i am looking for.
