Are the best Cameras uncool now? / What is a good camera?

Example 1:

I saw 28 years later, shot on iphone, then i watched part 2 without knowing it is now the alexa 35 and in the middle of the movie i thought, this one looks kind of boring.

Personally i think it has more to do with the used lenses and the dirtying up of the image in post. But still, a deliberate choice of the look is just another layer of creative message.

 

Example 2:

The Odyssey and the badly color matched shots and the missed focus. Normally i really dislike it. But after watching it thought, maybe that also helped me not getting tired 😀 there is a kind of tension in imperfection that gives hte eye and the brain something to focus on. The Advantages of Imax? Id, i know it is claimed Imax is the best Quality but to be honest i do not agree

 

Then i see People that say “i would never shoot on crap cameras like XY i only shoot Arri and Sony Venice”. And then a Movie or series comes along that looks fantastic but it used that hated camera. The same is for lens choices.

I do a lot mixed media films, where i mix footage of super8, camcorders from the 80s and 90s and ronin 4d stuff and idk i love shooting with clean lenses and i have chromatic abberations but sometimes getting a dirty image with a lot of flaws also seems right … what makes you choose a certain camera or a certain lens? Is it mainly fear of the elitists looking down on you when you do not use the best camera there is? Or are there actual things that are better for the audience. Or is it more futureproofing of not using trendy things that are maybe only interesting now but are horrible in 20years? Personally i think some stories benefit from certain looks or possibilities that “not so good” cameras or lenses offer. But what do you think?
