      Hello all!

Some background on me first, I have a bachelor’s degree in film and media and I have been doing freelance photography and videography for a while. I also work at a distillery/coffee shop and I run the social media there. I’ve been involved with a small group of Colorado filmmakers for a while now and we are currently working on a documentary and I was recently promoted to DP because our director knows how passionate I am about cinematography. This is my first time being the DP and I would love any advice but specifically on making a shot list. I’ve always been more interested in narrative films as opposed to documentaries so this is all new territory for me. I’m so excited that my director gave me this chance but I’m definitely feeling the imposter syndrome and would love all the help I can get! I’m working on a commercial for my distillery so I think that will be a great opportunity to practice a shot list and other skills. Thanks in advance for your advice!!

A shot list reflects the way you wish to impart information to an audience. For a drama, that might suggest leaving information out in such a way as to build expectation etc. Perhaps a documentary is a little different. You are trying to explain a subject as clearly as you can so it might be subtly different. But is it a scripted doc.? If you are following a subject as it evolves, a storyboard would suggest you have already made up your mind and your perspective is fixed.
