      Hi,

I don’t know if Roger will see this or if anyone will be able to answer my question. I’ve seen in interviews that Roger doesn’t like cinema lenses with vignettes or any built-in “character”, instead opting for a more sharp clinical output and if needing any effects dealing with that at the time like the Jesse James effect with the glass in front of the lens.

My question is, when it comes to stills photography, is this the same opinion? Or does Roger opt for lenses that have a bit more “Character” added to the image? ( like the infamous Fujifilm 35mm 1.4 lens). I’ve read that Roger uses a 35mm Lecia lens and camera but I’m curious if he looks for clinical photography lenses like the cinema lenses he often chooses. Any information would be great!

      Kind regards,

      Martyn.

Hi Martyn, this sounds like a question for Mr. Deakins himself, but if I can weigh in I’d say to get your hands on a copy of Byways and check out those optical characteristics for yourself! Seems that, similar to his lens preferences in cinematography, lens character that draws attention to itself isn’t often apparent in his stills. Aberrations become less noticeable when shooting monochrome too. On the technical side, there’s a cool picture out there of Roger with his Leica M9 and what appears to be a Summicron 35mm ASPH lens.
