Hi Roger and fellow forum enthousiasts.

I am interested in your insights on using a -callibrated- monitor on set, in the cases where you don’t have the comfort of having a blacked-out viewing environment, or DIT room, but have to rely on a monitor that is placed on the set itself.

Does everyone keep their monitor at 100 Nits, or is there a good way to adjust the display brightness to the viewing conditions? What are the cons and pro’s?

Off course color perception is affected by the environment as well. Would there be a future for self adjusting systems like the ones found on iPads? Heaven or hell?

I am certainly aware of the importance of callibration, but I have trouble trusting my eyes when looking at the same monitor in different conditions.

Looking forward to hear different approaches,

      thank you very much,

      Thom

A monitor is just a guide, an aid to the discussion between a cinematographer and director. In terms of what I do technically, it is only a reassurance. It wouldn’t make any sense to adjust its brightness or color to match its surroundings.

Thank you for your insight. I was probably overthinking it.
