Roger – I recently got a copy of Byways and really enjoyed your stills work, thank you for publishing!

I am wondering what black and white stock you reach for when shooting photography? And if there is any particular reason?

I got hooked by film photography as a side hobby a few years ago. Learned to develop and scan at home and enjoy the process. My favorites for different situations are currently Ilford Delta 100, Ilford Hp5, and Fuji Acros100

Anyone’s thoughts are welcome as it is interesting to hear how other cinematographers approach still photography!

Few years ago I shot some Kodak Tri-X 400 and developed it in coffee.
I think it was called Caffenol, made from ingredients that can be found in the kitchen, with instant coffee being the main one.

Then I left the films in the developer tanks for 3 days, bathing in very saturated salt water – that functioned as a natural fixer. And what can I say, it worked!

I never did it again though as the results, as interesting and at times powerful as they were – were not worth the work.

But I still like Kodak Tri-X.

Interesting DIY workflow! Sounds fun. I hear great things about Tri-X. Haven’t used Kodak black and white, just color. I feel like people start with either Ilford or Kodak BW and then stick to it haha
