Hello Mr. Deakins, (and anyone who has input 🙂

I am shooting in Costa Rica in a few weeks, and the weather forecast is not looking great. The show is supposed to be bright, sunny and tropical. Unfortunately, it looks like I will have rain. I have a small GLX crew on this one, and my biggest guns are an Aputure 600d and C, and my biggest frame is an 8×8.

To try and get some more life in my images, my plan so far is to overhead raincover with the 8×8 and use the 600d as a “Sunlight” back/kicker and the 6o0c into a bounce to fill.

We are going to shoot tight and shallow on long lenses to try and sell the effect a bit more.

Of course, I would love to fly in the 18K’s, but it’s just not possible on this one. I would appreciate any insight anyone has.

If you haven’t experienced a tropical rain the lack of sunshine can be the least of your problems. Rains in Costa Rica as in any other tropical area can get nasty very fast, be aware and listen to locals.

Your plan with what you have sounds the best option. As you say, you will need to sell the idea of a shiny paradise and without a big crew or big lights tight framing, careful positioning and taking care of your backgrounds will be your allies. The nice thing of working with a skeleton crew is you can improvise a lot more. I would add some mirror frames to your package which won’t break the bank and can get you out of  jail in a pinch, once you move away those 600 they become very anemic.

I was recently on a small shoot in the Caribbean which had to be shot later this June but we decided to move it to April precisely to avoid raining season and still we got rain half the days. Luckily there were quite a lot of interior work which we scheduled on raining days so the only person complaining was the sound guy.

        Good luck!

          Hello!

Thank you so much for the response. Yeah, the rain will be a problem for sure. From what I am reading, it is more likely to be sunny in the mornings, so we are going to try to plan around that.

Mirror boards are a great idea! I will get some of those.

          Thanks again!
