Hello! I’ve been browsing this forum on and off as an actor, because I just admire and value the process of cinematography so much. A lot of the interviews and questions that you answer are of course, for fellow DPs and filmmakers – but I was wondering about how actors can better understand the lens in order to deliver the shot along with the performance.

Is there anything that you wish more actors knew, or could bring to the performance to elevate the visual storytelling overall? Tom Cruise has done interviews where he’s discussed how great actors like Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson – they all understand the lens. I gather this means not moving all about the frame in the close-up, and things of the like. But as someone who doesn’t fully know the ins and outs of cinematography, I’m curious as to what more filmmakers/DPs wish actors knew on set. Thanks in advance!
