Hi Martyn, this sounds like a question for Mr. Deakins himself, but if I can weigh in I’d say to get your hands on a copy of Byways and check out those optical characteristics for yourself! Seems that, similar to his lens preferences in cinematography, lens character that draws attention to itself isn’t often apparent in his stills. Aberrations become less noticeable when shooting monochrome too. On the technical side, there’s a cool picture out there of Roger with his Leica M9 and what appears to be a Summicron 35mm ASPH lens.
