Working with the gaffer

Hi Roger, James and everyone in the forum!

I’ve been re-reading some looking at lighting posts recently and I’d like to know more about your approach to working with your gaffer in prep.

I know a lot of DPs that aren’t very specific about the fixtures they want, they talk about the quality of light they need and leave the rest for the gaffer.

I understand you make the diagrams and lighting plans you post, so, do you make them without the gaffer and the discuss them with him, or do you make them together? Do you usually choose the specific fixtures yourself?
