The Three Primary Colors

Hi Roger,

I’ve been thinking about this specific detail for a while that I find really interesting. I see a tendency of using the three primary colors (Blue, Yellow & Red) in a high quantity of shots throughout the movies you have shot. Sometimes the three colors are present all together and sometimes there are combinations of them. Such as red and blue, blue and yellow, yellow and red.

I’ve seen this pattern mainly in Prisoners, Sicario, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men. When it’s not in the lighting of the scene, it is in the production design. And it is usually small details that can easily be unperceived.

So basically my question is, are you the one that specifically asks the Art Department to place these colors? And secondly, do you choose the combinations based on the emotion of the shot/scene?
