      Hey Roger and site

Possibly gearing up to begin working with a new director on a short film. A lot of the references were Crime/Drama/Thriller based, some of which were from Michael Mann. This particular director has a background in European cinema and is into the work of Wim Wenders (Robby’s work). I specifically mentioned ‘The American Friend’ which they loved.

I’m a 1990’s baby so a lot of what I’ve seen has been from 1990’s and onward, my vocabulary for anything earlier is fairly limited in this specific genre.

Looking for recommendations with great cinematography that suits the story well but maybe isn’t too reserved or too ‘classic’ / formulaic in its approach– If that makes sense?

With Mann as a specific reference, I assume you’ve checked out Heat – if not, bump that to the top of your list. Style serves the story, and it basically establishes a lot of the grammar for a lot of the neo-noirs to follow.

Not exactly in the genre, but using an aesthetic that is pretty simpatico: Scorsese’s After Hours, which was his first collaboration with Michael Ballhaus (I think). Ballhaus has strong ties to the New German Cinema movement, too, which makes a nice connection to Wenders.

How did the shoot go, by the way?
