Recently I have shot an independent low-budget short film, and the whole Short Film was based on using natural sources of light. I didn’t use any other light in the whole 20 minutes of the film, so I got to learn a lot of things about how to modify, how to navigate, and how to observe the natural source of light. And I will point out some of the things and pointers that I learnt from that shoot:
-Planning of the Short of the same, what is required, how is the mood of the film? What kind of texture light is the same ones, sunrise, sunset, daylight, twilight, or Moonlight?
Plan your Short according to the time of the sun because that’s very, very important. What time did you shoot that exact scene or a shot-Observation of the sun path position is really important. There are apps for that
Also, the weather condition, whether it’s rainy, snowy, cloudy, sunny, et cetera
If you are shooting indoors, you’re going for a kid look for Windows so that you can make a source of light
If you’re shooting outdoors, then the path of the sun is really important-You can use mirrors, reflectors, diffusers, black, and white cloth to modify and reflect the light in a certain way that you want. These are some of the accessories that you can use to modify the lights in natural light if you’re shooting in natural light.
So these are some of the points that I learnt from my shoot. I hope this food really helps you, and if it did, let me know, and happy shooting.
