While editing my short i noticed that i had a shooting ratio of 1:20 or something like that (i cut it to less 10 minutes out of more or less 3 hours of digital footage. Less is more, isn’t it?) and it seems, from what i’ve read, that it’s an acceptable ratio for a first time director & editor and that with digital cameras the ratio has increased. When editing, i had plenty of alternatives , new ideas that emerged from the footage and so on. Being unexperienced i found very helpful to have so much footage to work on. I’m sure i’d have shot a lot less if i had to pay for the film. Whatever the result of my short will be, i am sure that it improved because of the freedom that digital gave me.
So i’m wondering if the digital actually changed the directors approach to coverage (even withing the limits of schedules, production costs, sets construction, location management etc etc) and hence the movie directing in general. What do you think about it?
