Hi Sir Deakins.  I noticed you bounce light off muslin sometimes for your key, others an ultra bounce.  If one bounces light off muslin or ultra bounce, will there be any difference in softness on the subject if all else is equal (light source, bounce distance, etc)?

Not Roger, but I think muslin is slightly more “matte” (definitely a rougher surface) so the bounce off of it might be a bit softer; otherwise the difference might be that unbleached muslin has a warmth to it compared to UltraBounce.

That’s right. Muslin is slightly more textured than Ultrabounce so the light bouncing off it is more even, as well as being warmer. The real softness of a bounce source depends on its size, and its size relative to the subject.
