A message from an aspiring cinematographer

Dear Mr. Deakins,

My name is Stéphanie, and I am a young aspiring cinematographer from France. I was recently accepted into a cinematography program in the suburbs of Paris, where I hope to develop my own visual language and learn more about the art of storytelling through light.

Your work has been a major inspiration for me. I am especially moved by the way you use light, composition, and atmosphere to serve the story rather than simply create beautiful images. Films such as Blade Runner 2049, 1917, and The Assassination have deeply influenced the way I look at cinematography.

I am at the beginning of my journey, and I would be incredibly grateful if you could share one piece of advice that you wish you had received when you were starting out as a cinematographer.
