Hey Roger & the community!
I was thinking about something on my drive home from an interview today... (applied at a camera house haha)
Do you ever have the fun, or the time, to shoot small videos with James or just about town? I don't imagine that you have a 3-ton grip truck outside of your place.. or maybe you do?---But does a set of bulbs, a 35mm lens, mirrorless camera and all of the years of technical expertise/wisdom give you the same amount of enjoyment as say being on a movie production? Making imagery and telling stories that you enjoy?
And to those in the community, given these restrictions, could you tell that Roger shot this short film?
I remember listening to you speak about Conrad Hall, saying that you could tell that he was the cinematographer on a film.. In a technical standpoint, what do you mean by that? key/fill ratios to give a mood? The use of a certain effect or lens? Would love to know how you came to understand that..
You're a huge inspiration and a mentor to all of us and I cannot thank you enough for putting this community together!
It was not about contrast ratios or any one technical element of his work but Conrad's 'taste' was there in all he did.
I don't shoot film outside of my work. I shoot stills with a Leica M8 and a single 35mm lens, which gives me immense pleasure .... that is when I can find a shot!
Ah--that makes a lot of sense. I can certainly say that I feel much the same in regards to your work.
Thank you for answering that, though a selfish part of me wished that you did and could share haha.. but i'm just being greedy at that point.
