Episode 132 - CARROLL BALLARD - Director (1 reply and 4 comments)
Team Deakins has the pleasure of speaking with director Carroll Ballard (WIND, THE BLACK STALLION, NEVER CRY WOLF, DUMA). We learn how he got involved in the project that became the film, Black Stallion, how he worked with cinematographer, Caleb Deschanel. We also discuss the particular challenges of that film. Carroll talks about the difficulties of working with animals and children as well as working with wolves and caribous in Never Cry Wolf, geese in Fly Away Home, and cheetahs in Duma. We also learn about how he met the extreme challenges of shooting the film Wind. We learned a lot in this episode!

Dear master roger i watched 'Black stallion'. How Caleb deschanel shot on these kind of fast horse game. I mean what grip item they used to follow running horse.
Easy, they picked a grip who could run fast!
Interesting podcast, pity we couldn’t ask more questions, he didn’t let anyone in the conversation and was left to ‘ramble’ on for too long. Not Roger/James fault as they didn’t want to interrupt while he was in full flow. Perhaps next time!
Perhaps they used a crane on a truck.
Carroll Ballard - Director.
This is one of the best podcasts I have listened to. Very interesting man imo.
It is clearly obvious that Roger and James enjoyed doing this one, they were fully engaged in the conversation and were eager to ask more questions. Roger showed an affinity with this Directors style of working. Very good podcast.
