Transitioning to bigger sets and crews (1 reply)
I'm curious how much of a learning curve there was when you went from documentary to narrative filmmaking. Did you lean on the gaffer in the early days to make the lights do what you want, or did you learn all the tricks of the trade some other way?
I gradually worked my way into feature film making from shooting documentaries through to television drama and cinema shorts so it was a pretty shallow learning curve. The first gaffer I worked with in the UK, John Higgins, had never been a gaffer on a major feature until we teamed up together. We met when he was a rigging gaffer on a Genesis video I was shooting and I have worked with him off and on now for over 30 years. The last time we worked together was on 'Skyfall'.
