Hey Roger-

For this day exterior in sicario, did you find yourself exposing for Emily's face or for the sky to keep some detail in it? Or always expose for talent and let things blow out a little in the sky if need be?

Thanks!

I wanted the whole thing to feel very hot so I left Emily's face a little brighter in the shadow than I might in other situations. The shadows are a little below my base exposure, which is what you see in the image.

I too am fascinated by this particular scene, did you shoot this while the sun was behind a patch of wispy cloud / haze? I recently had to shoot a completely natural (no room for any gear) shoot on a bluebird day and I couldn't get anywhere near this tight of a contrast ratio.

although now I think about it, I assume the light dessert sand is quite a convenient bounce while I was shooting on a tar stained wooden ship

For closer shots, I was using black cloths to cut down the bounce off the ground.

makes sense, Funny how you ponder a question for a while and as soon as you ask the question the answer presents itself... many thanks
