So I signed up for the lighting challenge, got a confirmation email, executed the challenge, and then realized while digging thru the forum that the challenge was actually issued back in 2016!

If there's anybody else out there in the same boat, I'd love to see what you came up with.

Here's our scene + write up, for what it's worth!

We went for a high-contrast, hard-edged filmnoir look for our first setup, then tried for a soft, daylight look.

We kept roughly the same lighting set-up for both shots, but changed the ratio and added diffusion to go from night to day, hard to soft. I wanted atmosphere for the day set, but we couldn't get a unit, so I diffused using a Glimmer Glass 3. A #3 is quite heavy-handed in hindsight, but learning to see these things is what practice is good for!

And yes, our actor is a little under-dressed... our wardrobe volunteer called in sick 🙂

Technical details:
Monstro VV at 7k
50mm Lomo anamorphic T2.8
I didn't want to stop down beyond T4 in order to keep the background soft, so I used a split diopter 1/2 to allow close focus on the actor's face while also holding the scissors.
