Dear master roger i have seen your most of the movies and read interviews also. you mentioned most of your movies light by muslin cloth and tweenies. But you have achieved specific look. For instance "Serious man" lighting entirely different from "Hudsucker proxy" and "Beautiful mind" lighting is different from "Shashank redemption" lighting. What was the secret trick? Same lights, same diffusion, same bounce but variety of look. Could you talk about it. How do you achieve different look from same muslim bounce, grid cloth diffusion?. Is it not really purely about lights and diffusion.
Interesting question, I am curious about this as well.
A lamp or a bounce material is only a tool. The basic 'look' of a film is created by the angle of the light and the contrast ratio. For instance, you can use a muslin cloth to bounce the light but how big is that bounce? You might have a 2K bouncing off a 12' x 12' muslin a few feet from your subject or you might equally have a 2' x 2' bounce 20' away. Same tools but a very different effect.
Do you use normally 12'x12' size for 2k light? If you want project through diffusion or muslim bounce you prefer same 12'x12' size? Apologize for basic question. You mentioned 12'x12' few feet from my subject or i might have 2'x2' at 20' away from the subject. What do you mean i might have equally? Your size comparison purely for differentiate the effect?Or small mathematics involved?
Master roger i have tried to learn lighting. I have used 1.2kpar HMI lights at nine feets distance from my subject. I did put 3x3 gateway diffusion(thick tracing paper) at five and half feets distance from light source, and diffusion frame to subject distance three and half feets. But I am not satisfied with my image. The diffusion frame almost close to the subject. I remember the theory softness is determined by size of the source is relative to the subject distance. Here by i have attached my image. But it was shot on mobile. I feel quality of the light lost. Could you tell me what is the wrong with my image. How to get richness of soft lights. Can't i create a soft light with single 1.2k HMI par lights.
You always said creating soft light pretty easy. But it's little hard for me. How did you get these good quality of soft light for two actress from hudsucker movie. Its long time ago. But could you assume or guess your image how did you light? Did you use 10x10 diffusion frame for first actress at the right distance. Weather the source is single or multiple what factor decide decide quality of richness lights.
I was probably using a bounce light or a series of small lamps projected through a matching series of diffusion frames. As has been discussed many times, a single large light bouncing or projected through a frame is not a soft as multiple sources. A row of 4 - 4' x 4' frames, whether bounce or diffusion, will appear softer than a single lamp bounced off or projected through a 12' x 12'.
Master roger what do you mean exactly through matching series of diffusion frames. Do you use connected series of frames or little gape between every frame itself.
I have done one small shoot. Its about industrilaist man's meeting. I couldn't hung any ceiling lights on top. Because it's practical location. Bit i have large transparent 1 inch mirror. The size of the mirror 26'x6'. I have minimal budget. So production gave only 2- 4k par lights. I did project the light through the mirror. I have maintained 11 geeta from the light source to mirror and the same distance mirror to subjects. I cant get enough size of the source. The result again same. Here i have attached my location image from interior view. Approximately how much light needed for 26'x6' mirror size. Can i put the diffusion Straight to mirror. The mirror boxed itself two differrtd sizes. You can see the white wood frame on the mirror itself. Could you teach me how much fire power may be needed for that room.
