daylight effect with tungsten sources (4 replies and 2 comments)
I've read so many times on this forum how you achieved beautiful sunlight effect with tungsten sources, as T12s and many others lamps.
For a music video I recently shot I had very little budget, and had to create three different setups. One of them needed to be a daylight effect coming from a window, off-frame.
I had no HMI nor any skypanel or anything, just a couple red head and 650w fresnels lamps.
So I found a big white sheet that I taped against the wall and directed all my sources at it, setting the camera at 3200°.
I quite like the softness it produced, but I find it to be quite warm, and not really daylight effect, and I'll probably have to cool everything in post.

Any idea why is that ? I'm guessing you always set your camera at 3200° as well and do no trick that much with white balance ? Then, how can I achieve a better sunlight look with tungsten lamps ?

Bouncing warms up the light a bit. The age of bulbs can also be a factor as they tend to get warmer.
But daylight changes temperature all day long so it depends what time of the day you want to emulate. What about adding some sunrays in the shot to give more 'presence' to the light coming through the window?
Yes, as soon as you bounce a light it will become warmer, especially off a white sheet. You could add an eighth or quarter blue gel to your lamp.
do you add blue gels often when you bounce with tungsten sources ?
I didn't want to add sunrays as this was more the idea of having a cloudy day, so a soft, white light, not a sun light
It can be a little expensive and time consuming to gel 20 or 30 lamps so I might balance to my main light source, even if that is a little warmer than I would like, and then print the image a little cooler overall.This applies whether I am shooting on film or digital but I would definitely have more reservations doing so on film as there is so much less latitude with an emulsion.
