Hello Roger and forum’s members

I have couple of questions regarding the Penthouse scene. I do understand the “intension” behind the lighting scheme, however I have issue wrapping my mind around the quantity of lights. I do understand that the use of gels and possibly the fog/haze on set affect the transmission of light but to me it feels like a lot of light.

1- did you use any NDs shooting that scene (I am assuming you shot it at 800 ASA) ?

2- How much overexposed was the backing?

3- Where was located the 20K? any gels on it?

On a related note I have never had the opportunity to test putting a row of blonds next to each other in order to project a uniform light on a backing. As a rule of thumb how spaced from each other blonds need to be at let’s say 20ft? and can you anticipate the quantity of light?

Thanks again for sharing

This was a set and I lit to the exposure I wanted, so no ND.

The backing was probably 2 stops over (I can't be more precise as I light by eye) but that calculation would depend on where the camera was looking.

The 20K was primarily used to create a hot pool of light to mimic the sun. On the first scene, which was supposedly late in the day, the 20K wasn't present but on the second, which was supposedly early morning, the 20K was at full spot onto the right hand side of the backing. In fact I had two lamps aimed at the same spot.

The row of Blondes were only about 2' or 3' apart, which, with a throw of 25', minimized any problem with a multiple shadow.
