I just saw 1917, and I thought it was a complete masterpiece. Hands down the best film I’ve seen in a long time (the Écoust part was my favorite). It was amazing how the entire movie looked to be one single shot. Why was it done this way? Did this pose any challenges while shooting?

Plenty of challenges! Why this way? That was Sam's choice. He wanted the audience to really experience the story with the characters.

The mother of all dolly-and-jib rigs -

Hats off to the riggers!  There must have been truckloads of clamps and adapters and boards and plates and poles and - well, just about everything!

Yes, and the camera was taken off the crane when it reached the far end of the trench and then carried hand held for another 40' before we made a blend.
