Career path (2 replies and 2 comments)
I have been shooting for a few years here is South Africa. A few documentaries, lots of music videos, commercials and a few other things. I really want to get to the point of shooting features and shooting on bigger sets. Do you think Focus Pulling or being 1AC for a while is a good route to learn and climb the ranks? I guess I just want to know what routes have been taken by others who are shooting commercials/ features on a regular basis. I feel like there are so many cinematographers/DOPs out there.
What were your big career milestones and how did they come about?
I was only an assistant for a day or two and I was really bad at it. My path was via Film School. When I graduated I began by working in documentary and television before getting a chance to shoot features. I don't shoot commercials and have never had much of an interest in doing so.
I have graduated film school and have filmed a bunch of small jobs but yet to sink my teeth into any thing big. I seem at a loss as how to really step up.
How long did you work before your big milestone moment came along?
Progress came as a gradual thing for me. The NFTS was the most significant step but there was never a actual 'milestone moment'. After Film school I spent what seemed like eternity, in reality it was probably more like 9 months, waiting for a job. Then one thing led to another and ..... suddenly I was shooting features.
