Critique thread (5 replies and 5 comments)
Hello Roger and fellow members,
Roger, I'm a huge fan of your work like most of us here. I was wondering if there is a section in this forum where we could post our work (that is available online for public consumption) for critique from you and other members. It could be clips, short films, music videos etc. If such a platform doesn't exist yet, would you be okay if I created a thread for the same?
That is an excellent idea! Let me think about how to do it. It would be nice if it were a specific area and not buried in the forum.
Thank you for a great idea!
I second that, James. I love viewing other people’s work, whether it’s a short film, pop video or even animation. As you know we do occasionally see shorts from time to time but they normally originate from “YouTube” and are available on general release so to speak. I’m all for it, so you have my vote. Pity we cannot control the “phishing” though, it’s getting to be a real pain in the neck.
Would it be possible to include photography in this critique thread?
This is a brilliant idea. A critique thread will a very practical approach as it will deal more with the forum member's challenges with low budget and other constraints that beginners face.
I'm trying to figure out (whenever I get a moment, since we're in the midst of a lot of prep) whether to try to do a separate area for this or try to do it within the forum set up. If it were in the forum, we would need to keep each topic restricted to the one video or image that was posted to start the thread. It would get messy if one topic started to be about many different people's work. Do you think people would abide by that if it's in the forum set up?
Hi James, I think the more practical choice would be to do it in a separate area. Of course whatever is less difficult for you to do this should be considered too.
To make it easy for members to find this separate area, there could be a link to it somewhere on this site.
They say that, if you want a problem solved, then give it to a ‘busy’ person.
To add on to my idea, perhaps below the forums tab there could be a critique tab which when clicked could either lead to a "separate area" or there could be a link to it.
I have two ideas I'd like to suggest:
1. Create a category (like lighting, camera etc.) called 'Critique' under which members can create their own topics with their OWN work asking for feedback. The only downside to this is some members might get ignored and don't get any feedback at all which IMO is counter-intuitive to this entire exercise. I personally think everybody irrespective of the quality of their work should get some feedback, with which I come to my second suggestion...
2. Create a topic under any category and call it 'critique' (and maybe pin it) and then in the post area you can write the guidelines / rules. So the comments section becomes the platform where members post their work for feedback with one rule that no one can post their work for feedback unless the previous poster has had at least one (or maybe two or three) reply about their work.
With the second method it will create a lot of pages but the benefit of that is new joiners who want their work critiqued will have a lot of comments to go through which in itself should be a learning experience.
Just my two cents. Other members should pitch in with their ideas too.
I really like this idea, hope to see it come to fruition!
