Blade Runner 2049 - Composing for two different Aspect Ratios (1 reply and 2 comments)
I saw "Blade Runner 2049" (2D screening in 2.39:1) yesterday and it really is stunning.
There has been a lot of talk about 2D or 3D but I'm also interested in the aspect ratios cause I've read that the IMAX version is in 1.90:1.
What was your approach for this in your work?
Did you always have the two aspect ratios in mind while framing?
How did you handle the footage in post. You certainly oversaw things like reframing as well, right?
I can imagine the answer already, but are you in favor of this kind of approach or did this force you into going for the middle-ground sometimes?
Cheers and thanks so much.
First and foremost we framed for wide screen 2D. There was little re framing required for IMAX as we had the top and bottom of the capture area to utilize form that format. I kept the whole sensor area as clear of lighting and rigging as much as possible but some of this area had to be cleaned up in VFX. I did oversee every version of the film as each required a separate timing pass.
I came to ask this question, the IMAX version was terrific, can't wait to see the wide screen version as well. Cheers sir.
I knew I would find the answer to this question here, thanks Roger!
