Adding skills to a Still Photographer's role

Postby Billy » Sun Nov 15, 2009 12:15 pm

I am a 44 year old still photographer in New York. I specialize in Interiors, still, and lifestyle photography. I am interested in parlaying my visual acuity to the moving image, and I am looking for some suggestions how to go about adding that element to my existing creative output.

I do know many photographers who have for years been given the opportunity to direct (or shoot) spots that extend from still assignments. The advent of the Canon5D MII and RED ONE cameras are making this even more an accessible choice.

(While that option has not presented itself to me yet, I am approaching an existing client at an agency. I told them my desire either to direct and/or shoot a reel around my photographic specialties. My thinking is they will help out with production/editing /art direction and I would direct and do camera work. It would be on spec, but something good could come out if it for both of us.)

But I wanted to specifically ask about acquiring cinematography or director of photography skills. I was thinking about taking some workshops at Main Media Workshops http://www.theworkshops.com where they have many film programs in cinematography and DP workshops. I also have a long history there.

But I hesitate because of my age. I thought this avenue may not be worth the pursuit, given the long rise up the ladder that the profession requests in those two areas – cinematography & DP. But I do sort of see myself as a person that loves looking from behind the camera. Maybe it’s just better to get involved through existing clients and offer a directors role?

In any event, any input will help me put things into perspective.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. And thanks for having this forum!

Your stills work looks excellent but I am not sure how it might relate to a film career. Being a cinematographer requires dedication and a serious commitment of time. I think the Main Media workshops would be a good idea. At the very least you might meet some people who are working in film as opposed to stills, which could help you formulate some ideas.
