HDR Cinematography

I found this intriguing.

It weirded me out the most when they shot the person using this technique. I'm still unsure of the practicality of this technology. The people that made this video said they're producing a film using this technology. Is this just another gimmick?

This is the fourth time I see this video linked, it has become the hit of the week, at the same time, RED has just anounced a +18 stop HDR video mode...

I believe the wierd look in the penson`s face happens because the underexposed side of the footage is a little bit out o focus...

I can see one or two situations when this look might be usefull, but i looks a lot like CGI to me...

More range than a frame of film has really doesn't seem to have much use that I can see right now. The shot with the person in it simply looks horrible/bizarre. The fact that all digital motion cameras I have used (which is most) lack any texture and don't deal with highlight roll-off naturally keeps me turned off.

I bet with HDR cameras available people will overuse the look, mostly in short-form material, much like when the ring-light became trendy not too long ago.
