Creating an old "video" or "film" look

Postby Alexius » Thu Sep 10, 2009 8:01 am

Hi Roger,

I'm throwing myself on the mercy of these forums to find the best way to recreate either an old precolour
video look or, going further back, a grainer old black & white film look.

Think early Ed Sullivan, or this fantastic black & white clip of Dave Brubeck.

I'm not looking for easy solutions (ie plugins or quick effects). I really want this to look authentic and legitimate.
Otherwise it falls flat.

Any interesting avenues to pursue? Ways to treat the stock? Settings on the camera? Tips? Hints? Magic tricks?

I can pursue any format (16mm, 35mm, video).

Thank you for your time (and anyone else who could possible leave me with a genius solution).

You could shoot on 16mm and with B/W negative. You could also shoot on 35mm and create the look in a DI suite. It is very easy to add grain as well as lens artifacts, even a video look, and this would give you a large degree of control. Mind you, much of the 'look' of the Dave Brubeck clip is in the framing and lighting.
